Surface trade up in December

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation show that surface transportation trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico was up 3.1 percent in December, compared with December 2006.

The value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in December was up 73.5 percent compared with December 1997, a period of 10 years. Imports in December were up 82.0 percent compared with December 1997, while exports were up 63.6 percent.

About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land. Trucking accounts for most of that $60.9 billion of surface trade.
