Trailer wheels bounce across I-95, kill motorist in Philadelphia

In an accident Thursday, Aug. 14, on Interstate 95 in South Philadelphia, a motorist was killed when wheels flew off of a semitrailer.

Philadelphia police say 64-year-old Maurizio Bertoli of Keansburg, NJ, died instantly Thursday afternoon when the left rear duals of a trailer came off, bounced across the highway, and crashed through the windshield of his minivan. Bertoli’s wife, 62-year-old Laura Bertoli, suffered minor injuries.

The trucker, 40-year-old Willie Benjamin of Washington, DC, was questioned and given a routine blood test. Both vehicles were impounded for investigation, according to media reports.

The Delaware County Daily Times reported that investigators have ruled out alcohol and drugs as a factor in the crash, but they are reviewing Benjamin’s log books.
