The Supreme Court said this week it would hear a case on whether U.S. voters must show a government-issued photo identification at polling sites.

The justices said they would hear arguments in a challenge to an Indiana law that requires voters to present photo ID issued by the state or federal government before casting their ballots.

The 2005 law applies to primary and general elections. It has been challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Indiana Democratic Party for imposing an unfair burden on the right to vote.

Advocates for the ID requirement say it helps combat voter fraud.

Nearly 30 states have some form of a voter ID law. Six states requires photo ID at the ballot box.

The court is expected to issue a decision by late June 2008 – months before the fall elections.
