Truckers on the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana came face to face with the high winds and heavy rains of Hurricane Humberto on Thursday, Sept. 13.
A Texas man died when a carport collapsed on him, and 13,000 customers lost power in Louisiana.
The highest winds were clocked at 80 mph, and the heaviest rains were on the order of 6 to 7 inches, according to local media reports where the storm hit.
Meteorologists said they’ve never seen a tropical depression turn into a Category 1 hurricane so quickly near landfall.
The National Weather Service reported that Thursday afternoon Humberto had weakened to sustained winds of 35 mph with higher gusts. It was moving west-northwest at 6 mph.
