Two laptops containing personal information about commercial drivers who haul hazardous materials have been stolen from a contractor who was working for the Transportation Security Administration.

According to The Associated Press, the laptops contain the names, birthdays, CDL numbers and, in some cases, Social Security numbers of nearly 4,000 people.

The computers were stolen last week, but details are just now coming to light.

The contractor told the TSA that the data had been erased from the laptops, but TSA investigators discovered that someone with data recovery skills could possibly retrieve the information.

This news comes just as the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program is rolling out at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware.

TSA officials said the organization has instructed the contractor, who has not been named, to fully encrypt hard drives from now on.
