A propane truck driver was critically injured and three others were hurt when the truck exploded at a Tacoma, WA, metal foundry on Saturday, Oct. 6.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the truck was transferring propane to smaller tanks on the ground when something – possibly welding work – sparked the blast.

The truck was carrying 8,000 gallons of propane, and the explosion sent up a big fireball and blew a set of the truck’s axles hundreds of feet into the air.

The axles landed in flames on a nearby highway, which was then shut down.

The blast also damaged an electrical substation and knocked out the power for 13,000 customers.

The propane truck driver is 64-year-old Charles McDonald, who drives for IXL Transportation Services of Molalla, OR, the Post-Intelligencer reported.
