Quebec is increasing its tax on diesel fuel and gasoline by just under a penny per liter – or about 4 cents a gallon – to pay for programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to media reports, the tax will be assessed to the energy companies rather than being charged at the pump. But, the companies are expected to pass the increase on to customers.

Province officials said they expect the tax increase to generate about $200 million a year to reduce greenhouse gases.
