Feds to study truckers’ mortality rate

Two federal agencies say they’ll soon launch a major study aimed at figuring out why truckers have a death rate 11 times higher than the general work force.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, often referred to as NIOSH, have sought input from OOIDA and other groups on how best to study the issue.

NIOSH officials have said they to plan survey drivers at 40 truck stops nationwide.

An OOIDA official suggested they may want to survey truckers at other locations, too, since less-than-truckload drivers, for example, don’t use truck stops as much as long-haul truckers.
