The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently handed out $445 million in grants to strengthen ports and transit systems against potential terrorist attacks.

About $200 million was earmarked for ports, which the agency rated based on the level of highest risk.

$120 million was distributed to ports in tier one, and $82 million was allocated to ports in tiers two through four, according to a Homeland Security news release.

The money will be used for training, exercises and improved credentialing and bomb detection.

“These risk-based investments will increase security for vital assets,” said Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson in the release.
