Dole Foods to tag veggies with RFIDs

The world's largest producer of fresh vegetables has started tracking shipments of spinach and lettuce with RFID tags.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Dole Foods Co. is using the radio frequency identification devices to restore consumer confidence and shield itself from lawsuits.

Dole's bagged spinach was included in a huge recall after an E. coli outbreak in September 2006 killed three people and left more than 200 ill.

According to the Journal, the tags will allow Dole not only to track the vegetables as they move from fields to trucks to processing centers, but will actually make it possible to pinpoint which part of a farm field the leafy greens came from.
