Alberta has become the first Canadian province to adopt a province-wide automated system that will allow some trucks to routinely bypass inspection stations.

According to media reports, the so-called PIC system will apply to carriers that have exemplary safety records, and will allow their trucks to bypass inspections 98 percent of the time.

The system relies on roadside detectors that read a truck’s transponder, giving inspectors a picture of the vehicle along with its license and serial numbers.

Other provinces have the system in place in some areas, but Alberta is the first to adopt it throughout the province.
