Six people died in a tractor-trailer Monday in southern Mexico Monday during a human smuggling operation gone awry.
According to The Associated Press, the victims were Central American migrant workers who were hiding underneath a false floor in the trailer – with tons of bananas stacked on top.
On a bumpy road, some of the bananas crashed through the floor, crushing six people and injuring dozens more.
The migrants had paid between $5,000 and $7,000 each to be smuggled to the U.S.
Mexican officials told The AP the truck driver fled the scene.
