Trucker acquitted in diplomat’s death

In Pennsylvania, a truck driver who’s an illegal immigrant has been acquitted of criminal charges in the death of a diplomat from Honduras.

According to The Associated Press, Sam Thompson, a native of Ghana, was charged in connection with the death of 31-year-old Nuria Ortiz Navarro.

Navarro was killed in February 2007 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Pittsburgh when Thompson’s tractor-trailer rear-ended her car.

Prosecutors argued that Thompson had fallen asleep after falsifying his log to disguise his fatigue. But the jury foreman told reporters they couldn’t say, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the trucker did anything wrong.

Despite being acquitted, Thompson was returned to jail where he was to be turned over to immigration officials, The AP reported.
