Lawmakers in Virginia have come up with a new way to raise money for roads and bridges – and it promises to prove very costly for residents who violate traffic laws.

As of Sunday, the state started adding what’s called a “civil penalty” to the existing fines and court costs.

Now, a speeder who’s doing 20 mph or more over the limit can be socked with a fine of more than $1,100.

Similarly, first-time drunken drivers could face a total of more than $2,700, most of it in civil penalties.

The new civil penalties only apply to Virginia residents, not to truckers who are just passing through the state.
