Indiana House approves lease money for local roads

The Indiana House of Representatives approved legislation Monday, Feb. 26, that would earmark $60 million in interest from the Indiana Toll Road lease for use on local road and street construction projects.

According to The Associated Press, the proposal - which came from Democrats in the state - was approved by a narrow margin of 51-48.

The money will come from interest earned on a construction fund that was created when Gov. Mitch Daniels leased the Indiana Toll Road to Cintra-Macquarie, a private, foreign consortium, last year.

The bill - HB1830 - will now go before the state Senate.
