The effects of a 13-day-old strike by Canadian railroad workers are being felt on both sides of the border, on the rails and roads.
According to media reports, the strike has caused cargo volumes at the Port of Vancouver to drop by 50 percent, a plant in Ontario to shut down, and industries from forestry to auto making to feel the pinch.
One OOIDA member told Land Line that at a Ford stamping plant near Buffalo, NY, truckers are trying to make up for loss of rail transportation to a plant in Canada.
However, he said a shortage of specialized hauling racks has led to long periods of uncompensated downtime for truckers.
