A former Crete Carrier Corp. truck driver who faces seven counts of manslaughter in Florida appeared in court Wednesday, Feb. 21, to waive his right to a speedy trial.
According to The Gainesville Sun, 32-year-old Alvin Wilkerson could have insisted he be tried within six months of his arrest in September 2006.
Wilkerson was behind the wheel on Jan. 25, 2006, when his tractor-trailer slammed into a car that was stopped behind a school bus near Lake Butler, FL.
Seven young members of one extended family died in the car. Nine students aboard the bus were injured.
Neither Wilkerson nor his attorney made any comments about the case during or after the court appearance, the Sun reported.
