Railroad agency asks Congress for train HOS regs

Truckers have been putting up with hours-of-service regulations for years. But railroad workers, including engineers, switchmen and dispatchers, haven't been asked to work under similar time constraints - until now.

The Federal Railroad Administration is hoping to establish new regulations for the industry, and submitted a bill Wednesday containing the proposed changes.

Under current regulations, train crews can work 12 hours with 10 hours of rest, but if they work even a minute less than 12 hours, they're only required to have 8 hours of sleep, according to The Associated Press.

The Federal Railroad Administration's request doesn't spell out specifically what hours the new HOS rules will mandate, The AP reported.
