Truck driver identified after bridge collapse in Minnesota

Authorities in Minneapolis have identified the driver of a bakery truck who was killed Wednesday, Aug. 1, when the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed.

He was Paul Eickstadt, 51, of Mounds View, MN.

He was driving for Sara Lee, which owns the former Taystee bakery in Roseville, MN.

The Taystee logo was visible on Eickstadt’s trailer, but the eyes of television viewers everywhere were focused on the compelling images of the truck’s cab engulfed in flames.

Eickstadt had just started his shift, setting out to deliver a load of bakery items to Mason City, IA, when the bridge collapsed, authorities stated.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Authorities did not confirm Eickstadt’s identity until Friday, Aug. 3, two days after the bridge tragedy, when they confirmed he was the fifth person to have been killed.
