Speed lowered at Alabama’s spill-prone ‘Malfunction Junction’
The speed limit at the intersection of interstates in Birmingham, AL, has been lowered from 60 to 50 mph.
The Associated Press reports that the junction of Interstate 65 and I-20/59 – known to many truckers as “Malfunction Junction” – is an area where there have been numerous instances of improperly secured steel coils falling off of trucks.
A total of 26 cases of steel coil mishaps have been reported in the Birmingham area since 1987.
State officials have frequently claimed excessive speed as a factor.
