Congestion-sensing interstates unveiled in California

In Orange County, CA, truckers and other motorists have a new way of calculating their travel time.

The state’s Department of Transportation has embedded 5,500 sensors in the pavement on freeways. The devices will determine whether traffic is moving normally – or at a snail’s pace.

According to the Orange Country Register, the information is then transmitted to overhead electronic message boards along the routes, which will inform drivers how long it will take them to reach given points.
