DOT nominee advances through U.S. Senate committee

Mary Peters, President Bush’s nominee for Secretary of Transportation won the unanimous approval of a U.S. Senate committee Monday. She is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate later this week.

If approved, the Republican Peters will succeed Democrat Norman Mineta as the nation’s top official overseeing highways, railroads, airports and shipping.

Peters is a strong proponent of using tolls and public-private ventures to build and maintain highways.
