The Clean Air Board of Central Pennsylvania has asked the state government to enact idling restrictions for big trucks and other diesel vehicles.

The proposed restrictions would limit idling to five minutes per hour, except when the temperature falls below 40 degrees or above 80. The restrictions do not apply if the truck is using anti-idling technology, such as an auxiliary power unit.

An article in the Harrisburg Patriot-News referred to the five-minute limit as "a sufficient time to heat or cool an occupied truck cabin."

All idling - regardless of temperature - would be restricted to five minutes after 2010. Again, anti-idling technologies would be excluded.
