FMCSA to tackle congestion problems

The federal agency that truckers associate with enforcing hours-of-service rules and other safety issues plans to get into the business of reducing highway congestion as well.

In a draft statement published online, John Hill, the new director of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said FMCSA will no longer be a "single issue" agency.

Hill said that by encouraging states to use high-tech equipment to check truck safety and drivers' credentials, the agency can reduce the amount of time trucks spend at weigh stations and at roadside inspections, thus reducing congestion around those areas.
