The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether Massachusetts officials illegally misled investors when it came to safety inspections at Boston's Big Dig.

The Boston Globe reports that for the last 18 months, bond holders were assured by disclosure statements that the governor had ordered ongoing safety inspections of the Big Dig tunnels.

However, according to the Globe, there had actually only been one inspection in one tunnel during that time period.
