Houston port to add security measures

The Port of Houston is planning to spend $1.1 million to add new security measures at certain facilities, including cameras, lights and fences.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the Port of Houston Authority Commission approved two security contracts on Monday, May 22.

The first contract was approved to place lights, cameras and fences at the port’s Manchester, Care and Southside terminals. The second contract was for devices to control access to the North Turning Basin. All are major cargo movement areas in the port complex.

According to the port’s Web site, the Port Commission also authorized the acceptance of proposals for a $1.5 million video surveillance system to provide perimeter intrusion detection for the entire port complex including detection of objects left behind or removed from a specific area.

No specific dates have been set for the implementation of these programs.
