The national average price for diesel saw a spike of 7.4 cents for the week ending March 6, its biggest jump since October 2005.

The Energy Information Agency reported that the national average was $2.545 per gallon, the highest price since November 2005.

The Central Atlantic region, where prices jumped 8.9 cents to $2.682 per gallon, posted the biggest increase. The Lower Atlantic region saw a 7.5-cent increase to $2.516 per gallon, while the New England region rose 6.3 cents to$2.656 per gallon.

The East Coast as a whole saw a 7.8-cent increase, rising to an average of $2.571 per gallon.

In the West Coast region, prices jumped 8.8 cents to $2.711 per gallon. California – which posted the highest average in the country – was only slightly higher than the West Coast at $2.739 per gallon.

The Midwest, typically among the least expensive regions, saw an 8.3-cent increase to $2.500 per gallon. Not far behind, the Gulf Coast posted the lowest average at $2.499 per gallon.

The Rocky Mountain region saw the smallest increase, rising 3.6 cents to $2.545 per gallon.
