The president of the Canadian Auto Workers local in Tilbury, Ontario, said Arvin-Meritor officials made several unacceptable demands in their final contract offer.

The company locked about 250 union members out of its brake plant after the CAW leadership rejected the offer.

The CAW’s Rick Garant said the company’s offer includes eliminating about 80 jobs and would force workers to wait until age 58 to get their pension, even if they had invested 30 years with the company by an earlier age.

Arvin-Meritor plans to ask the Ontario Ministry of Labor to conduct a secret ballot vote so that rank-and-file union members can decide on the contract for themselves.
