Truck racer Mike Ryan sets another record on Pikes Peak climb

Normally, truck racer Mike Ryan might be disappointed by the fact that his world record for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was broken over the weekend – if he wasn’t the one who broke it, that is.

Although official numbers have not yet been released, Ryan told Land Line that during the holiday weekend, he and his custom-built Freightliner finished the race in an unofficial 12 minutes and 43 seconds, three seconds faster than his previous record.

Ryan’s tractor is powered by a 1,250-horsepower Mercedes-Benz engine, and can reach speeds of more than 100 miles an hour.

The route Ryan took up the mountain, incidentally, is mainly a dirt road with 156 turns and no guard rails, according to information on the event’s Web site.
