Now that the 2006 diesel emission standards for trucks are on their way, two pollution groups are working to get the Environmental Protection Agency to enact similar standards for diesel engines in trains and boats.

The State Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators and the Association of Local Air Pollution Control Officials have released a study detailing the effects of diesel-fueled engines in boats and trains.

The study, released on Thursday, Feb. 2, estimates that emissions from trains and boats are responsible for 4,400 premature deaths a year.

The groups charge that the EPA said two years ago that it would develop new emission standards for trains and boats by 2005. To date, no such standards exist.

EPA officials told The Associated Press that they planned to propose new regulations later this year.
