U.S. 20 expansion stalled - again

Driving through Northwest Illinois on U.S. 20 can be quite a challenge. There are stretches past Freeport, IL, that are still only two lanes. And they will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

The Dubuque, IA, Telegraph Herald reported Illinois officials have funding to build bypasses at Galena, IL, a popular tourist location, but there’s no sign the $711 million needed to expand U.S. 20 to four lanes will be coming any time soon; the project has, again, come to a halt.

According to the Telegraph Herald, the need to expand U.S. 20 from Rockford, IL, to Dubuque, IA, was first identified in the 1960s.
