The national average price of diesel rose 4.3 cents to $2.485 per gallon for the week ending Jan. 9, according to the Energy Information Administration.

That’s a 55-cent increase from prices for the same week in 2005.

The increase was the first in two weeks and marks the highest single-week increase since November. It was also the first week since early October that every region in the country posted an increase.

The biggest increase was found in California , where prices shot up 6.3 cents to $2.601 per gallon. The rest of the West Coast saw a 5.3-cent increase to $2.577 per gallon.

The highest prices, however, were posted in New England , at $2.676 per gallon. The Central Atlantic region wasn’t far behind at $2.626 per gallon, while the Lower Atlantic region lived up to its name at a “lower” price of $2.473 per gallon.

Overall, the East Coast posted an average price of $2.528 per gallon for the week.

The lowest average – $2.421 per gallon – was found in the Rocky Mountain region. The Midwest and the Gulf Coast weren’t far behind at $2.451 and $2.453 per gallon, respectively.
