As if the Tennessee Highway Patrol didn’t have enough controversy to deal with, another inquiry by a Nashville newspaper has revealed the flubbed handling of investigations by the organization’s own internal affairs department.

On Sunday, Feb. 19, The Tennessean reported that THP officials had not taken notes, recorded interviews or saved any public documents related to a number of ongoing investigations, which violates policies in the patrol’s rulebooks.

According to news reports, Interim Safety Commissioner Gerald Nicely has ordered the reopening of five harassment cases, after The Tennessean questioned him about the sketchy interview techniques.

“I had a meeting yesterday with everybody involved, and letting them know I’m unhappy about these things continuing to happen,” Nicely told The Tennessean.

The reopened cases are the latest in a string of scandals to emerge from Tennessee’s state and local police forces, most of which stem from an ongoing investigation by The Tennessean. The newspaper has uncovered more than a dozen incidents, with allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to high-level cronyism throughout the state’s police force and various levels of government.
