Trucker charged in Chicago Hired Truck investigation

Politicians and business owners aren’t the only ones getting caught up in the federal investigation into Chicago’s Hired Truck program.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, Carl Edwards, a former truck driver, was charged with one count of bribery for his involvement in the scandal-ridden program, in which government officials took bribes and political campaign contributions from trucking companies in exchange for lucrative work with the city.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Edwards allegedly gave more than $5,000 in bribes between December 2003 and November 2004.

Edwards is the 44th person to be charged in the ongoing investigation. Twenty-eight people have pleaded guilty or been found guilty, including 15 city workers, and 21 people have already been sentenced, according to the Chicago Tribune.
