The U.S. DOT has announced that a former trucker who was involved in a well publicized multiple-fatality crash seven years ago has been sentenced to four years in prison and fined more than $9,000.

The driver - Gulvinder Singh Sandhu - was on Interstate 78 north of Philadelphia on Sept. 22, 1999, when his tractor-trailer jumped a guardrail and hit an oncoming minivan.

All four occupants of the minivan were killed, including a 4-year-old boy and his parents.

Investigators said Sandhu had routinely falsified his logbook to conceal that he was driving more hours than permitted.

He drove for a Canadian company and, after the crash, became a fugitive in Canada for four years before turning himself in.
