The Environmental Protection Agency says it wants to see onboard diagnostic systems on all new heavy trucks and buses.

In a news release, the EPA said the systems - which would monitor harmful emissions, detect the need for emission-related repairs and let service technicians know what the problem is - would be similar to the ones that are already standard on cars.

At this point, the EPA proposal is just that - a proposal.
