Washington truckers lose overtime court battle

In Washington state, five truckers who haul agricultural products have lost their bid to win about $53,000 in overtime pay.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the truckers, even though two lower courts had upheld their claims.

Over a three-year period, the truckers hauled potatoes and apples for Esparza Truck Inc. and routinely put in more than 40 hours a week.

But the state Supreme Court ruled that Washington state law clearly exempts employers from paying overtime to anyone who transports agricultural products.
