The province of Ontario’s only toll road, the 407 Express Toll Route, is still operating at a loss, despite taking in more money.
The Canadian Press reported that the private foreign company 407 International Inc. lost an estimated $11 million in the first quarter of 2006, despite increasing revenue by $12 million.
The 407 ETR is owned by Macquarie Infrastructure Group of Australia and Cintra Concessiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A., of Spain. That combination also has the long-term leases for the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway. Cintra is also involved in the Trans-Texas Corridor project.
More vehicles than ever are using the 108-kilimeter 407 ETR, the company reported, with 462 million vehicle-kilometers traveled.
Drivers spent an average of $4.08 per trip, up from $3.83.
