After the September 11 attacks, the District of Columbia set up a so-called “exclusion zone” – and barred hazmat trucks from getting within 2.2 miles of the Capitol Building.

But officials at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration say federal hazmat laws trump the local ordinance and that the exclusion zone has got to go.

The FMCSA issued the notice of administrative determination of pre-emption in the Federal Register on April 10, 2006.
