Torrential rains have caused a section of California’s Pacific Coast Highway to be closed indefinitely.

According to the California Department of Transportation, a sinkhole on Highway 1 near Devil’s Slide, located between Pacifica and Montara, forced the closure of the roadway Sunday, April 2.

Inspectors believe heavy rains, which have fallen steadily for more than a month in the region, created mudslides beneath the highway, which are probably causing the sinkhole, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Caltrans officials did not specify when or if the roadway would be repaired, but advised motorists traveling through the area to find an alternate route.
