Deer warning system helps prevent accidents on Iowa roadways

An Iowa company is working out its own answer to the age-old problem of deer that simply won’t pay attention to designated deer crossings.

Oh Deer Inc., a company in Mason City , IA , is working with the Iowa Department of Transportation to install its “roadside deer warning system” on roads across the state with high deer/car collision rates, the Quad City Times reported.

According to the company’s Web site, the system uses infrared cameras and motion detectors to spot deer nearing roadways. The motion detectors trigger warning lights up to a quarter-mile away to alert approaching motorists.

Jaime Reyes, a safety review engineer with the Iowa DOT, told the Times that the system is designed to pinpoint the deer long before they’re on the road. He said the system was tested on a county road near Clear Lake , IA , and should see statewide implementation on wildlife accident-heavy roads later this year.

“The system works by detecting the deer in the ditch before the deer crosses,” Reyes said.

A similar program using infrared detectors is being separately tested by 12 western states, which have come together with a goal of eliminating animal-related accidents.
