Truck driving senator rescues woman from burning car

Vermont state Sen. Robert “Bobby” Starr is getting a different kind of attention than many politicians these days.

Starr, a Democrat from Troy , VT , is also a truck driver and president of Starr’s Transportation. He recently aided a fellow truck driver in rescuing a woman trapped in a burning vehicle.

On Sept. 14, Starr was driving Autoroute 40 near Quebec City in Canada when a hole suddenly opened up in the road, according to The Associated Press.

The car in front of him, driven by Anne Ayotte, suddenly slammed on its brakes and skidded into the hole, which was about 4 feet wide at the time. Starr, unable to brake in time, drove over the hole, which ripped the wheels off his truck.

Without wheels, the fuel tank of the truck hit the road and exploded. The rig jackknifed and slid into the guardrails. Starr ran from his truck and back to Ayotte’s vehicle. The front end was crushed and the woman was trapped.

Another trucker, Matt Matthew, came along and the two of them managed to open the door and get the woman out, carrying her to safety.

Investigators found that a steel culvert under the highway had collapsed causing the hole, which grew to 30 to 40 feet wide across the highway.

Starr downplayed his role in helping the woman escape.

“I didn’t do anything that any decent person wouldn’t have done,” he told The AP. “I wouldn’t have slept good if that lady had died.”
