More trouble for Connecticut trucking company

The hits just keep on coming for American Crushing & Recycling, the Connecticut company whose truck was blamed for a wreck that killed four people near Avon , CT , in July.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, a judge issued an order to freeze the assets of the company because victims of the accident are suing for damages.

But a local television station reported that the freeze might not have come in time to stop the company from selling off five of its trucks. Those are the same trucks that state inspectors pulled off the road a week earlier, citing numerous safety violations.

Delbert Cornell, chief of the state DMV’s commercial vehicle safety division, suspended the company’s 10 trucks Wednesday, Sept. 21. Five of the trucks were immediately put out of service for numerous violations, including brake defects, steering problems and flat tires, the Hartford Courant reported.

WFSB-TV, a Hartford-based CBS affiliate, reported that when investigators arrived at the company’s headquarters in Bloomfield early this week, three of the trucks were missing. David Wilcox, the company’s owner, allegedly had the trucks driven off of the premises with dealer plates, claiming they had passed re-inspection.

In a related story, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is calling on the DMV to demand proof of insurance for all trucking companies in Connecticut .

That request came after news came to light that the American Crushing & Recycling truck involved in the July 29 crash did not have insurance.
