Holy moly: National average for diesel tops $3 per gallon

The price of diesel shot up on Friday, Sept. 30, in every state, as much as 30 cents in some places.

ProMiles reported a national average of $3.059 per gallon, up more than 13 cents from the previous day. ProMiles also showed 34 states with prices higher than $3 per gallon.

Florida even posted higher prices than California , which usually has the highest in the country. Prices near $3.40 per gallon were reported in several parts of the country.

Flying J officials reported low supplies at several of stations in Texas , Mississippi , Missouri , Florida and Georgia .

Petro officials said their location in Beaumont , TX , was expected to open by Monday, Oct. 3, following cleanup from Hurricane Rita. In a note on its Web site, the company said supplies in the Southeast were improving, though it was still experiencing low supplies at one station in Shorter, AL .

Oddly enough, prices for crude oil fell slightly in midday trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices had rose slightly during the morning before settling back down to $66.20 per barrel by midafternoon.

One reason for the sudden increase in fuel prices may be the news out of the Gulf of Mexico that hurricane damage to oil rigs in the Gulf may be worse than was first thought.

The Associated Press reported that Hurricane Rita may have caused more damage to the oil rigs than Katrina did.

At least 13 oil rigs in the gulf were seriously damaged or destroyed by Rita, according to ODS-Petrodata, and nine of the 12 pipelines that move natural gas and oil onshore are still shut down or operating at less than full capacity.

The U.S. Department of Energy said refineries in Beaumont and Port Arthur , TX , and Lake Charles , LA , are not operating. Those refineries typically produce about 1.7 million barrels of refined products per day.
