Contractor sentenced to probation for Hired Truck connection

A 74-year-old contractor has been sentenced for his involvement with Chicago’s scandal-ridden Hired Truck program.

On Tuesday, a U.S. District Court judge sentenced Willie Brown to five years of probation, and ordered him to pay restitution of $6,600 for stealing city-owned asphalt for private use, WBBM-TV reported.

Brown pleaded guilty in June to buying the asphalt at nearly half its going price from corrupt city officials.

So far, 36 people have been charged in the ongoing federal investigation of the Hired Truck scandal, in which city employees took bribes and political contributions in exchange for work with the city.

The investigation has also included people who were not directly involved in the bribe-taking but still profited from its practices, such as Brown.

Twenty-three of those charged have pleaded guilty, including 12 city workers, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
