Australian truckers stage fuel protest blockades

More than 200 owner-operators blocked the Pacific Highway in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, Sept. 23, and more such protests could be on the way, according to media reports.

Though police cleared the roads and got traffic moving fairly quickly, ABC News reported that the Australian Long Distance Owners and Drivers Association – the group behind the protest – plans to stage similar slowdowns across the country to highlight the problems of low rates and rising fuel costs.

Another trucking group, however, said it doesn’t think the protests are the way to handle those problems.

Chris Althaus, chief executive officer of the Australian Trucking Association, told the Sydney Morning Herald that truckers need to consider the alternatives to blockades and protests, though he does sympathize with their plight.

“Customers of transport need to be more receptive to fuel levies and other mechanism to pass on fuel costs that the trucking industry has no capacity to absorb,” he said. “This is critical to the viability of many industry operators, particularly owner-drivers and small fleets.”
