A practice followed by professional truck drivers for decades would become law for all drivers in a bill under consideration in the New Jersey Senate. The proposal is designed to protect police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops.
Dubbed the “Move Over Act,” the bill would require drivers to maintain a safe distance and reduce speed when approaching an emergency vehicle parked by the road with their lights flashing.
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Nicholas Asselta, R-Vineland, would require drivers to merge into a lane further away from an emergency vehicle. On two-lane highways, drivers would be required to reduce speed before passing the emergency vehicle.
Failure to obey the rule could result in a $50 fine.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 30 states have implemented similar safety zone rules. Colorado and North Carolina implemented their rules earlier this year.
New Jersey’s effort – S2126 – is awaiting a vote before the full Senate. If approved, it would move to the Assembly for further consideration.
