FEMA continues to shuffle relief trucks

The good news for truckers carrying hurricane relief supplies who have been stranded in Montgomery , AL , for the better part of a week is that some of them will finally be moving.

The bad news is, they’ll be moving to yet another FEMA staging area.

The Montgomery Advertiser reported that the Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to move leftover ice from several staging areas to storage facilities in Georgia , Arizona , Florida and Massachusetts .

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, more than 100 trucks left the Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery , AL , bound for a storage facility in Gloucester , MA , to wait for another opportunity to be used. With Hurricane Rita making its way across the Gulf of Mexico , that opportunity may not be far off.

Meanwhile, dozens of trucks carrying ice, water and food for hurricane relief are parked in a roadside lot in northwestern Maryland .

The Kansas City Star reported that the trucks were redirected from Katrina relief efforts and sent to Maryland to prepare for Hurricane Ophelia. As it turns out, Ophelia didn’t do as much damage as expected, so the trucks weren’t needed.

Deborah Wing, a spokeswoman for FEMA, said the trucks will be unloaded at a FEMA staging area in Cumberland , MD , and the drivers will be allowed to leave.
