Senators mull highway-funding cuts to pay for Katrina relief

One of the big questions that has been asked about the billions of dollars the federal government has pledged to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina is – where will that money come from?

According to some Republicans on Capitol Hill, it could come from trimming the fat from the Highway Bill, which President Bush signed into law on Aug. 10.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-IN, told ABC’s “This Week” that Congress may set aside some of the 6,000 earmarked projects added to the Highway Bill before it was passed earlier this year. No specific projects have been targeted for cutbacks thus far.

The plan, which has been dubbed “Operation Offset,” also calls for delaying a prescription drug benefit under Medicare for as much as a year, according to The Associated Press.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, also suggested reviewing the Energy Bill to look for potential cutbacks.
