Truckers protest high fuel prices with slowdown in Ireland

Dozens of truck drivers staged a slowdown in Dublin, Ireland, on Monday, Sept. 19, to protest the rising cost of fuel in that country.

About 30 truckers drove into Dublin to urge the government to cut back on taxes for diesel, according to Ireland On-Line.

Irish fuel taxes are lower than most of the rest of the European Union. Taxes on fuel in that country are about 44 cents per liter, compared with nearly 70 cents per liter in Britain.

Even so, the protesting truckers said the taxes were still costing them too much and were driving many of them out of business.

One of the truckers, Kieran McKenna, told Ireland On-Line that the truckers had to stage the protest in order to get the attention of the government.

“There’s a lot of men gone out of business or sold up, and it’s going to put an awful lot of people out of work,” he said. “Haulage keeps everything moving in this country. It’s a service we provide, but we can’t work for nothing.”
